Summary
Bacground: Submental fullness, also referred to as “double chin”, is a common aesthetic concern. Weight gain, genetics, age-related skin inelestacity, atrophy and collagen loss can contribute to the submental fullness. In addition, retrogenia, underdeveloped mandible, bone resorption, obtuse cervicomental angle secondary to low hyoid bone and / or excess skin, photodamage, SMAS and ligament laxity, age-related fat compartment volume loss, and hormonal changes can aggravate the appearance of the neck making the submental fullness look more prominent. When taken into consideration that post-surgical skin remodelling and retraction is affected by a variety of factors such as age, race, skin condition, general health, scar tissue, and sexual dimorphism in the ageing face and neck anatomy, then the solution to the problem becomes even more complex requiring a multilevel approach.
Aim: To present a combined modality approach for the treatment of submental fullness.
Method: Using helium plasma with radiofrequency energy for maximum contraction of soft tissue following small volume liposuction to the lower face, submentum and anterior neck to effectively target and improve the appearance of double chin.
Results: This two-step technique has produced consistent and long-lasting results, high patient satisfaction, and has a low complication rate.
Conclusion: To date, none of the existing non-surgical treatments or surgical procedures can claim victory over submental fullness as a standalone. Using Renuvion as an adjunct to low volume submental and neck liposuction optimises long-term aesthetic outcomes by promoting new collagen synthesis and enhancing skin’s innate elasticity while maintaining a favourable safety profile.
